Elements of the 66th and 67th Armd Inf landed at Mehdia and Fedala/Safi respectively on 8 Nov 42 in North Africa. CCB received the surrender of Mazagan on 11 Nov 42, and later some elements fought at Beja Tunisia. The division entered combat as a whole during the invasion of Sicily 10 Jul 43. CCA assauUed Licata while the rest of the division landed east of Gela. CCB mopped up the Niscemi area while CCA advanced, and on 15 Jul 43 the division assembled at Campobello and then followed the army advance to exploit breakthroughs. It was committed into action 22 Jul 43 and rapidly drove to the outskirts of Palermo. The division was then sent to England and trained for the invasion of Normandy France.
The division landed in Normandy France 9 Jun 44 and initially employed to strengthen the Auville-sur-le-Vey Bridgehead. It attacked 26 Jul 44 through 30th Inf Div and took St. Denis-le-Gast 28 Jul 44, being relieved in the Percy area 29 Jul 44. Tessy fell to CCA on 1 Aug 44 and on 7 Aug 44 the division was committed to stop the German drive on Avranches, and on 14 Aug 44 CCA overran Domfort. On 19 Aug 44 the division attacked west of Dreux to cut German forces off from the Seine between Paris and Elbeuf. It reached Le Neubourg 23 Aug 44 and resumed the advance 30 Aug 44, reaching positions northwest of Cambrai by 1 Sep 44. CCA crossed the Albert Canal on 13 Sep 44 and reached the Mass River the next day as the German defenders withdrew. CCB crossed the Albert at Meerseen 15 Sep 44. but its bridgehead was subjected to heavy fire the following day and CCA crossed at Valkenburg. The Germa were forced back to Sittard which was taken 18 Sep 44 as the division effected a breakthrough and drove to Gangelt, but a strong German counterattack restored their lines 19 Sep 44. The division then took up defensive positic Geilenkirchen.
The division attacked 3 Oct 44 as it crossed the Wurm River at Marienburg to expand the 30th Inf Div Bridgehead. CCB attacked from Uebach the next day. suffering heavy tank losses, and CCA reinforced. CCB was stopped short of Geilenkirchen 6 Oct 44. The division fought through heavy combat at Baesweiler and Oidtweiler to attack Aachen Gap at Wuerselen starting 13 Oct 44. The division attacked 16 Nov 44 and took Puffendorf on the outer ring of the Juelich defenses with CCB. which was counterattacked the next day and CCA committed. Against strong opposition, CCB took Apweiler and held it against counterattack 18-19 Nov 44. The division renewed its attacks in heavy rain 20 Nov 44 and CCA fought the Battle for Merzenhausen 22-27 Nov 44. CCA then took Barmen and reached the Roer River on 28 Nov 44. The division then assumed defensive positions along the Roer until released as a result of the German Ardennes Counteroffensive, moving to the Durbuy-Marche area in Belgium 20-22 Dec 44.
CCA reached Buissonville 24 Dec 44 and CCB took Celles the next day and held it against counterattack. The division cleared Humain against strong opposition and then was relieved in the Havelange area by 83rd Inf Div, regrouping on 28 Dec 44. The division attacked toward Houffalize on 3 fan 45 and fought the Battle for Odeigne 4-6 Ian 45, reached the Ourthe River 15 Ian 45, and occupied Houffalize 16 Ian 45. The division then was relieved by the 4th Cav Group 19 Ian 45 and withdrew for rehabilitation.
The division assembled across the Roer River on 27 Feb 45 and attacked 1 Mar 45 across the Cologne Plain as it assaulted over the Nord Canal. It concluded the offensive 4 Mar 45 as CCB took Verdingen on the Rhine. It crossed the Rhine River 27 Mar 45 and relieved the 17th A/B Div 29 Mar 45. CCB then drove to Lippstadt where it made contact with the advancing 3rd Armd Div 1 Apr 45. The division commenced the Battle for the Teutoburger Wald Passes 2 Apr 45 and by 5 Apr 45 CCA had reached and crossed the Weser River at Ohr and CCB at Grohnde. CCA advanced to take the bridge at Schulenberg over the Leine River intact the next day. After regrouping 7 Apr 45. the division renewed its offensive 10 Apr 45 as CCB took the Oker River bridge at Schladen. CCB then drove 57 miles to reach the Elbe River south of Magdeburg on 11 Apr 45. CCA assaulted Magdeburg with the 30th Inf Div 17-18 Apr 45. The division was moved to an occupation zone south of Braunschweig 20 Apr 45 and mopped up stragglers in Forst Konigslutter 21-22 Apr 45. Hostilities ended officially on 7 May 45. |
