In addition to the losses reflected in the above table, there were "temporary" losses resulting from combat operation. Crews of the Division Maintenance Battalion repaired a total of 6,324 vehicles of all types. Of this number there were 1 305 Medium Tanks, 395 Light Tanks, 728 Half-Tracks, 1 063 2.5-ton trucks, and 1260 jeeps.
The division arrived in Normandy France on 23 Jun 44 and entered combat against the Villiers-Fossard salient northeast of St Lo 29-30 Jun 44. CCB crossed into the Airel Bridgehead on 7 Jul 44 and the division reached the Haut-Vents crossroads after heavy combat by 11 Jul 44. CCB passed through the 1st Inf Div to seize Marigny 26 Jul 44, and CCA forced a crossing of the Sienne at Gavray on 30 Jul 44. It then secured a crossing of the See at Brecey 31 Jul 44 and on 1 Aug 44 CCB attacked toward St Pois. The division assembled 12 Aug 44 and the next day swrung around Domfront toward the Vire-Argentan Road to close the Falaise Gap, capturing Ranes after heavy combat on 15 Aug 44. It fought through Fromenthal 16-17 Aug 44, and on 25 Aug 44 CCB crossed the Seine River below Paris at Tilly. The division crossed the Marne River in the Mieux area and continued to pursue against disorganized resistance, crossing the Aisne River east of Soissons on 29 Aug 44. Advancing east from Namur astride the Meuse, the division seized Huy 6 Sep 44, mopped up Liege 8 Sep 44, took Verviers against rear-guard resistance, and reached the West WaiJ at Schmidthof on 12 Sep 44.
The division breached West WaJJ fortifications between Roetgen and Rott with CCB on 13 Sep 44 as CCA pushed through antitank obstacles to Nutheim. CCB crossed the Vicht River southwest of Stolberg 14 Sep 44 as CCA reached Eilendorf, a suburb of Aachen. On 15 Sep 44 the division encountered the second belt of West Wall defenses where it suffered heavy tank losses in the Battle of Geisberg Hill which commenced that same day, as CCB took but was forced out of Mausbach. The next day CCA was halted in its advance on Stolberg, and CCB finally took Geisberg Hill 17 Sep 44 and then was forced off. The division then fought the Battle for Weissenberg Hill and Muensterbusch Hill 18-20 Sep 44. Stolberg finally fell 22 Sep 44, as the division postponed its West WoJJ offensive and used smoke screens to withdraw CCB task forces from Donnerberg. The division was next committed to clearing the Lousberg Heights and cutting the Aachen-Laurensberg Highway 18-28 Oct 44. The division attacked the Stolberg corridor on 16 Nov 44 and took heavy tank losses at Hastenrath and Scherpenseel which fell 18 Nov 44. The division took Huecheln after battling through a minefield on 24 Nov 44.
The division attacked to clear the west bank of the Roer River on 10 Dec 44 and took Geich the next day. As a result of the German Ardennes Counteroffensive, CCA went in defense of Eupen, CCB assisted 30th Inf Div, and the division assembled in the Hotton-Le Grand Pre area on 19 Dec 44. CCB attacked Stoumont and La Gleize 20 Dec 44 while the remainder of the division attacked to secure the Manhay-HouffaUze Road. The division contained a German attack at Hotton. but lost a key road junction southeast of Manhay 23 Dec 44 and the folhm^ing day its roadblock at Belle Haie was reduced. The division attacked to take Grandmenil 25-26 Dec 44, and CCA recovered Sadzot after its temporary loss 28 Dec 44. After the 83rd Inf Div took over this zone at the end of the month, the division attacked toward Houffalize on 3 Jan 45. Fighting across Groumont Creek, the Bois de Groumont. and into Provedroux by 8 Jan 45. the 83rd Inf Div attacked through its lines the next day. The division then attacked into Bihain 12 Ian 45. reached the Ourthe River by 19 Jan 45. and seized Gouvy and Beho on 22 Jan 45.
The division attacked out of the Elle River bridgehead 26 Feb 45 and gained two bridgeheads at Glesch and Paffendorf the next day over the Erft River. After repulsing counterattacks, the division attacked out on 3 Mar 45 and took Stommeln with air support. It reached the Rhine River at Roggendorf and Worringen 4 Mar 45 and fought the Battle for Cologne 5-7 Mar 45 assisted by the 104th Inf Div. After maintaining defensive positions, it crossed the Rhine 23 Mar 45 and attacked again 25 Mar 45. It reached the Lahn River at Marburg 28 Mar 45 and then closed the Ruhr Pocket after the Battle of Paderborn 31 Mar-1 Apr 45. The division reached the Weser River on 7 Apr 45 and the Mulde River near Torten 15 Apr 45. It fought the Battle for Dessau 21-23 Apr 45 and was relieved along the Mulde 25 Apr 45. It wdthdrew to Sangerhausen for rehabilitation 26 Apr 45 and hostilities ended 7 May 45.
