CCB of the division landed east and west of Oran North Africa 8 Nov 42 and entered the city 10 Nov 42. On 24 Nov 42 CCB moved from Tafaroui Algeria to Bedja Tunisia and raided Djedeida Airfield the next day. reaching Djedeida 28 Nov 42. CCB moved southwest of Tebourba on 1 Dec 42, engaged German forces on El Guessa Heights 3 Dec 42, but its hues were pierced 6 Dec 42. CCB withdrew to Bedja with heavy equipment losses 10-11 Dec 42 and was placed in reserve. CCB next attacked 21 Jan 43 in the Ousseltia Valley and cleared that area until 29 Jan 43 when sent to Bou Chebka. and arrived at Maktar 3 Feb 43. CCA fought at Paid Pass commencins 30 Ian 43 and advanced to Sidi Boii Zid where it was pushed back with heavy tank losses 14 Feb 43 and had elements isolated on Djebel Lessouda. Djobol Ksaira, and Caret Hadid. CCC. which had been constituted on 23 Jan 43 to raid Sened Station on 24 Jan 43. advanced toward Sbeita and counterattacked to support CCA in the Sidi Bou Zid area on 15 Feb 43, but was repulsed with heavy losses. The division withdrew from Sbeita 16 Feb 43 but by 21 Feb 43 CCB contained the German attack toward Tebessa. The German withdrawal allowed the division to recover Kasserine Pass 26 Fob 43 and assemble in reserve. The division moved northeast of Gafsa on 13 Mar 43 and attacked in heavy rains on 17 Mar 43 as CCA took Zannouch. but became immobilized by rain the next day. The division drove on Maknassy 20 Mar 43 and fought the Battle of Djebel Naemia 22-25 Mar 43 and then fought to break through positions barring the road to Gabes 29 Mar-1 Apr 43. It began to follow up the withdrawing German forces 6 Apr 43 and attacked toward Mateur with CCA on 27 Apr 43, which fell after hard fighting on Hills 315 and 299 on 3 May 43. The division fought the Battle for Djebel Achtel 5-11 May 43 and entered Ferryville 7 May 43, The German forces in Tunisia surrendered 9-13 May 43.
The division was reorganized in French Morocco and began arriving in Naples Italy on 28 Oct 43. Entering combat along the Rapido River in mid-Dec 43, the 6th Armd Inf took up positions on M.Lungo 31 Dec 43. A task force fought the Battle for M.Porchia 5-7 Jan 44 and suffered heavy losses. Less CCB, the division was landed at Anzio beginning 24 Jan 44 and attacked Colli Laziali 30 Jan-l Feb 44 before going into defensive positions. It contained the German assault on the beachhead by counterattacking 19 Feb 44 after heavy air and artillery preparation. CCA and CCB opened the general offensive to breakout of the Anzio area 23 May 44 and cleared Campoleone Station with heavy tank losses on 29 May 44. Task Force Howze drove up Highway 6 against rear-guard resistance 3 Jun 44, and the division took Albano and entered Rome 4 Jun 44 as it pursued the retreating German forces up Highway 1. After Viterbo fell without opposition 9 Jun 44, the division was withdrawn for rehabihtation 10 Jun 44. It resumed the advance 21 Jun 44 and CCA, suffering heavy tank losses, fought the Battle for Casole d'Elsa 2-4 Jul 44. It then engaged in limited action until reheved on line 8 Jul 44, Elements with Task Force Ramey gained the heights along the Orlo River 20 Jul 44.
The division took over front-line positions 20 Aug 44 and crossed over the Arno River 1 Sep 44, CCA clearing M.Pisano by 3 Sep 44 and CCB taking the Altopascio road center by 4 Sep 44. The next day CCA took Lucca, and on 8 Sep 44 the division reverted to active patrolling before crossing the Serchio River on 10 Sep 44. CCB took Castelvecchio and M. Liguana 18 Sep 44, but CCA was delayed in the Ponte a Moriano area by heavy opposition. The division regrouped on 20 Sep 44 and CCA attacked the Monterumici Hillmass 8 Oct 44, where the division battled for most of October. The division relieved the 91st Inf Div on line on 22 Nov 44 and moved to Lucca on 26 Dec 44, The division made a limited attack and took Carviano 8 Mar 45 and fought for Salvaro 15-27 Mar 45, which fell after being evacuated. The division opened its offensive toward Suzzano 14 Apr 45 which it took the following day as it fought the Battle for Vergato 14-16 Apr 45. It moved rapidly forward astride the Samoggia River and CCB crossed the Panaro 22 Apr 45 as CCA bypassed Modena. CCA reached the Po River at Guastalla and Luzzaro the next day and crossed 25 Apr 45 to intercept retreating German forces west of Lake Garda. The division took up positions near Milan 29 Apr 45, which was already occupied by partisans, and then was relieved by the 34th Inf Div on the Ticino River northwest of Milan 1 May 45. HostiUties ceased in Italy 2 May 45. |
