The division landed at Le Havre France on 9 Nov 44 and advance elements moved to the front at Weisslingen 5 Dec 44 and attacked toward the Maginot Line. The division reheved the 4th Armd Div 7 Dec 44 and CCA took Singling on 9 Dec 44. The next day CCA captured Rohrbach-les-Bitche and the division reached Bettviller 12 Dec 44. The division reached Utweiler Germany by 21 Dec 44 and then withdrew for rehabilitation.
The division attacked the Rhine River strongpoint of Herrlisheim on 8 Jan 45 with CCB which seized part of the town the next day, but became surrounded on 10 Jan 45. After fierce fighting the division withdrew from Herrlisheim 11 Jan 45 and took up defensive positions west of the Zorn River. It next attacked to reduce the German Gambsheim Bridgehead on 16 Jan 45 but made little progress as CCB was held up at the river southeast of Rohrweiler. CCA managed to get into Herrlisheim on 17 Jan 45 but the 43rd Tank Battalion was wiped out there. CCA then abandoned the town the next day but suffered very heavy losses.
The division attacked through the 28th Inf Div at Colmar on 3 Feb 45 and CCB seized a bridgehead across the 111 River near Sundhoffen and Ste Croix en Plaine. CCA cleared Rouffach on 5 Feb 45 and effected junction with French forces which sealed the Colmar pocket in the Vosges Mountains. The division then withdrew to St Avoid vicinity for rehabilitation, except that CCA assisted the 70th Inf Div near Forbach 2-8 Mar 45.
The division attacked through the lines of the 94th Inf Div on 18 Mar 45, bypassed Lauterecken, and reached the Rhine River north of Mannheim on 20 Mar 45. The division took Ludwigshafen on 21 Mar 45 and Speyer and Germersheim on 24 Mar 45, thus clearing the Saar Palatinate. The division crossed the Rhine at Worms 27-28 Mar 45 and advanced rapidly to take Wuerzburg against light resistance. It crossed the Main at Ochsenfurt 3 Apr 45 and CCA fought the Battle for Wuerzberg 4-5 Apr 45. The division assisted in the reduction of Schweinfurt by blocking the highway to Bamberg on 11 Apr 45, and the next day encircled the Uffenheim pocket with CCR. The division assaulted across the Aisch River at Ipsheim 14 Apr 45 and advanced with all three Combat Commands in the assault to capture Ansbach 18-19 Apr 45. After seizing Feuchtwagen on 20 Apr 45 the division sped toward the Danube River and CCA captured the bridge at Dillingen before it could be demolished on 22 Apr 45. The bridgehead was strengthened with the fall of Wertingen 24-25 Apr 45. The division then was relieved at the bridgehead by the 3rd Inf Div on 26 Apr 45 and crossed the Lech River at Landsberg 27-29 Apr 45. It cleared the area between the Ammer and Warm on 30 Apr 45, and on 1 May 45 drove southeast from Starnberg across the Isar River to reach Inn. Elements crossed the Inn River on 3 May 45 into Austria, and the division was moving toward Innsbruck when placed in reserve the next day. It engaged in security duty until hostilities were declared ended on 7 May 45. |
